• ANNOUNCEMENT: More than 37 million Mexican students across grade levels will resume classes via TV and internet on April 20th after a month-long suspension due to the coronavirus outbreak, Mexican education authorities confirmed Tuesday.
• CHALLENGES: From elementary to university, Mexican federal and state education authorities agreed to go ahead with a resumption of classes through distance-learning methods. According to Mexico’s statistics agency (INEGI), 92% of Mexican homes have a TV set and 52% have internet connection.
• AUTHORITIES: “(We want) that people who have some knowledge or ability to share it with their family. This with the aim that this transmission of knowledge allows us to value the importance that they have within society”, said Esteban Moctezuma, Mexico’s Education Minister.
• RURAL: According to Moctezuma, authorities are planning to use radio transmissions in order to reach the most isolated areas in the country. The states with the lowest penetration of internet services include the southern states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, Guerrero and the central state of Tlaxcala.
