• SALE: Cruise companies docking in Mexico are slashing their sale prices to 50% of its original value to keep the industry afloat in the middle of the coronavirus outbreak. According to Cruiseline.com, the regular average cost for a 7-night cruise is anywhere between USD 920 and 3,650 per person.
• SPECIAL: “People are scared. There are cancellations. Fares are 50% down…. A ship cannot sail if it is not at least half full (of passengers). This is why companies are applying super special rates,” said Arturo Musi, head of Mexico’s Association of Cruise Line Service Providers (AMEPACT).
• INDUSTRY: Last year, the cruise industry brought to Mexico a record-high of 8.9 million in total passenger traffic, according to Mexican government figures. Half of the total number of passengers who arrived in Mexico during 2015, landed in Mexico’s Caribbean island of Cozumel.
• AGAINST: Currently, the US Department of State is recommending US citizens against traveling by cruise. Also, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that cruise passengers are at increased risk of the person-to-person spread of any kind of infectious diseases, including coronavirus.
