• ATTACK: The mayor of the Ahumada municipality in the northern state of Chihuahua, Juan de Dios Valle Camacho, survived a murder attempt Wednesday night after unknown gunmen attacked him at the Ciudad Juárez airport, ten miles south of the US border.
• MURDER: The attack against the mayor of Ahumada -a sparsely populated municipality south of Ciudad Juárez- happened just two days after his 21-year-old son was killed in a previous attack also at the airport. On Wednesday, a woman at the airport died of heart failure after hearing the shots.
• AUTHORITIES: “At the moment the mayor of Ahumada is already under protection…with his own family….The important thing is to continue with the investigation and…establish to who is responsible for this aggression”, Chihuahua state Attorney General, César Peniche, told Mexican TV.
• AHUMADA: A regular stopover for motorists traveling from Ciudad Juárez south to Chihuahua city, the town of Villa Ahumada -seat of the Ahumada municipal government- entered international news in 2008 and 2009 after drug gangs launched brazen attacks against law enforcement.
