• VIOLENCE: At least 254 women were killed in execution-style murders in Mexico during January and February of this year with the central state of Guanajuato recording 72 cases, according to an independent count by Mexico City’s Reforma newspaper.
• CASES: Among the victims of this violent wave are Leslie Rico López, a police chief in the port of Guaymas in the northwestern state of Sonora and Aracely Alcocer Carmona, a radio journalist in the border city of Ciudad Juárez in the northern state of Chihuahua. Both were killed in February.
• PROTEST: A wide number of women’s groups are calling for Mexico’s women to join a nationwide movement on Monday, March 9th labeled as “A Day Without Women”, a 24-hour strike, as a sign to protest persistent violence, harassment, attacks and discrimination.
• MACHISMO: “These violences occur within the framework of a generalized machismo that permeates family, labor, social and economic practices”, said the Mexican government’s anti-discrimination body (CONAPRED) regarding the current protest movement.
