• WIND: Eleven new power generation projects, worth USD 1.3 billion in 2020, are expected to increase Mexico’s installed wind capacity up to 7,000 megawatts (MW), pushing the need for more transmission infrastructure, according to the Mexican Wind Energy Association (AMDEE).
• POTENTIAL: According to the AMDEE, Mexico’s installed wind capacity could increase up to 10,000 MW in the next 5 years, but this would require the government to increase investments in distribution and transmission lines. In 2019, Texas installed wind capacity was estimated in 28,000 MW.
• INFRASTRUCTURE: “Transmission infrastructure is indispensable for the development of wind energy. Mexico will need to strengthen its infrastructure so that the wind sector can continue to operate and grow”, said Gavin Rennie, lead partner for Latin America North Power Utilities at EY.
• AUCTIONS: Back in early 2019, the López Obrador administration canceled new transmission infrastructure auctions arguing economic, technical, and planning factors. Two major transmission capacity development projects, one in Baja California, and one in Oaxaca were also canceled.
