• ATTACK: An unknown number of assailants shot and killed Jorge Valtierra, the acting police chief of Acámbaro (pop. 112,000) in the central state of Guanajuato, marking the third time a local officer was killed this year in one of the Mexico’s violent regions.
• RATE: According to new government’s data, the Acámbaro municipality had the highest murder rate in October in all Mexico (157 per 100,000). Precisely on Thursday, the commander of the new National Guard, Luis Rodríguez Bucio, visited the area where he learned about the killing.
• VISIT: “We were talking to (commander Rodríguez Bucio) who learned about the events, very unfortunate events. The federal government’s report of the most violent cities just come out and our municipality is within those 50 most violent municipalities”, said Acámbaro’s mayor Alejandro Tirado.
• OFFICERS: Located in the heart of a fight between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel, the southwestern part Guanajuato has seen increased violence. 67 police officers have been killed in the state in 2019, according to Causa en Común, a Mexican NGO.
