• TROOPS: Around 1,100 Mexican National Guard troops are expected to arrive Tuesday to the Irapuato-Celaya industrial corridor in the central state of Guanajuato where two powerful criminal organizations are engaged in a violent turf war that has left scores of murders.
• GANGS: With 3,693 homicides recorded this year so far, Guanajuato has seen increasing violence since at least 2015 due to the fight between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and the Cartel de Santa Rosa de Lima prompting the state to seek federal help this week.
• IRAPUATO: Known for its increasing manufacturing base -including a Ford transmission plant-, the Irapuato municipality -Guanajuato’s second largest city- will be receiving 250 troops. Local authorities these could bring a pause to a violent wave that killed two police officers last week.
• FIGHT: “We had a very tragic week, tough, hard for our (police) force and this says a lot about different things. First it speaks of the work of the officers themselves. It shows that (violent) events are being fought”, said Ricardo Ortiz, mayor of Irapuato (pop. 574,000).
