• RECORD: Mexico’s tequila industry remains on track to break its exports record after a marquee year for the spirit notwithstanding the temporary shut down of on-premise service at restaurants and bars around the world caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

• NUMBERS: According to the most recent figures by the country’s Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT, by its acronym in Spanish), tequila exports have grown 21 percent this year compared to 2020, an already record-setting year. Mexico’s tequila exports totaled 220.2 million liters between January and August.

• GROWTH: “We are doing very well in production, and for the remainder of the year we expect to exceed the 2020 figure by between 20 and 25 percent”, said Ramón González Figueroa, general director of the CRT. “The main consumer is the US, with 86 percent of the export volume”.

• TREND: While tequila production had to adapt to Covid-19 social distancing regulations, strong consumer demand in the US has continued to grow including an uptick in online sales last year. The vast majority of tequila exports comes from 100 percent agave tequila as people move to more refined versions.
