• BOOM: A larger harvested area, higher yields and lower prices have propelled Mexico’s already booming avocado exports with analysts estimating a 26 percent increase in the first four months of 2021 compared to the same period last year. The US is the main market for Mexican avocado exports.
• ESTIMATES: According to estimates agricultural consulting group GCMA, avocado exports between January and April of 2021 reached 565,000 tonnes. This occurred at the same time that the price per tonne of avocados fell 15.1 percent and as many restaurants in the US reopened.
• PRODUCTION: “During the first four months (of 2021), the positive yield per plot (of avocado) was sustained, with an increase of 1.6 percent in harvested area and 5 percent higher production”, said GCMA in a research note. The firm projected an increase in production throughout the year.
• MILLION: Once considered an impossible milestone, Mexican avocado exports surpassed the one million tonnes mark earlier this year. According to Mexico’s Avocado Producers and Exporters Association (APEAM), exports totaled 1,102,719 tonnes during the 2020/2021 marketing year.
