• COLLAPSE: The death toll of Monday’s collapse of a subway overpass in Mexico City rose to 24, while the number of people injured remained at 79, authorities confirmed Tuesday afternoon. The incident is Mexico City’s deadliest tragedy since the 2017 earthquake that killed more than 200.
• GOLDEN: Since its opening in 2012, Mexico City’s subway Golden Line has been hampered with serious construction and mismanagement irregularities that have resulted in sanctions against dozens of high-level city officials along with tortuous lawsuits involving construction companies.
• MISSING: “I want to know if my son is alive or dead!”, said Marisol Tapia, mother of 12-year-old boy Brandon Giovanni Hernández Tapia who according to her was traveling on the train last night. “It’s not possible. I have been touring half the city all night and he is nowhere”.
• INCIDENTS: Mexico City’s subway system has experienced a slew of tragedies since March 2020 when two trains collided at the Tacubaya station leaving one dead and more than 40 injured. In January of this year, a fire destroyed the system’s control center and killing one person.
