• FIRST: Mexican authorities identified the country’s first case of the B.1.617 variant of the Covid-19 virus that is feared to be contributing to a surge of cases in India. Over the weekend, officials said that the case involved a 40-year old man in Mexico’s central state of San Luis Potosí.

• NUMBERS: As of late Sunday, Mexico has officially reported 2 million 247,357 Covid-19 cases and 217,233 Covid-19 deaths. Mexico is the fourth country in the world with the most Covid-19 deaths in absolute terms, just behind the US, Brazil and India.

• CASE: “The whole research process is undergoing. Most likely (the infection) was from contact with people who had been in the US”, said Miguel Ángel Lutzow, San Luis Potosí state’s top health official, adding that the infected man first showed symptoms early in April and is no longer hospitalized.

• RESEARCH: In its most recent weekly epidemiological update, the World Health Agency (WHO) designated India’s variant as a variant of interest and said it was present in at least 17 countries. Early modeling by WHO suggests that the India variant may have an increased transmissibility.
