• ATTACK: President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) renewed his attacks against a federal judge for temporarily suspending Mexico’s new electricity law, which favors state-owned utility CFE, calling into question the judge’s authority and demanding an investigation into his conduct.

• DEBATE: “They are going to say that we are threatening (the judge). But no, this seeks to air public affairs. That is dialogue, debate”, López Obrador said Monday regarding his request to investigate federal judge Juan Pablo Gómez Fierro who issued a preliminary injunction against the law last week.

• PAUSE: Arguing that it gives undue advantage to state-run CFE and that it eliminates competition, private companies have filed legal challenges against the AMLO-sponsored electricity law. Since its enactment last week, Mexican courts have issued 11 preliminary injunctions pausing the law.

• CONCERN: “I am concerned about the (President’s)…lack of understanding of the rule of law. The judges are the final guarantors of the Constitution”, former Supreme Court justice José Ramón Cossío said in Twitter and who was alsosubject of attacks by López Obrador today.
