• ARRESTS: The number of arrests linked to the November 2019 massacre of nine members of a Mormon offshoot community in the Mexican state of Sonora rose to 19 on Sunday after authorities reported two new apprehensions. Yet, only three of the total arrests have been for homicide.
• PROSECUTIONS: Until now, most of the arrests in connection to the massacre where 6 children and 3 women died -all of them dual US-Mexico nationals- involve organized crime and drug trafficking charges. Witnesses accounts describe dozens of gunmen shooting and torching the victims’ vehicles.
• DEMAND: “I strongly ask that they be tried for (the crime) they committed and not for other crimes because what we need is justice and not just that a law be applied that can be manipulated”, Adrián LeBaron, who lost a daughter and four grandchildren, said Sunday on Twitter.
• MOTIVE: Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (FGR) has yet to disclose the purported motive behind the killings that happened two hours south of the Arizona border. Authorities have mentioned that most of those arrested belong to the drug trafficking organization known as “La Línea”.
