•HOSPITALITY: Battered by the pandemic lockdowns and the drastic fall in travel, Mexico’s hospitality industry lost nearly one quarter of a million formal tax-paying jobs in 2020 despite the country expected to climb several spots among the most visited countries in the world.
•INDUSTRY: According to data from social security institute (IMSS), the Mexican hotel industry lost 96,157 jobs while the country’s restaurant industry recorded and even larger drop of 151,138 jobs. The combined figure represents 38% of the 647,000 formal tax-paying jobs Mexico lost in 2020.
•RESTAURANTS: “Unlike what has happened with most productive sectors, employment in food and beverage services shows a deteriorating pattern in year-on-year comparisons”, said CICOTUR, a tourism industry think-tank housed at Anahuac University in Mexico City.
•RELIEF: Mexico City and the Caribbean coast state of Quintana Roo are the most drastically impacted Mexican states by the hospitality industry downturn. Last week, several restaurant owners in Mexico City openly defied partial lockdown restrictions arguing desperation.
