•DEATHS: Mexico recorded Wednesday the day with the most reported coronavirus deaths, a total of 1,165, since the start of the pandemic. With Mexico City area as the epicenter, the number underscores how the pandemic has picked up during the past two weeks.
•HOSPITALS: Six Mexican states have a hospital occupancy above 70 percent. In addition to Mexico City, hospitals in two central states (State of Mexico and Hidalgo) are close to be overwhelmed. Other states with high occupancy are: Guanajuato, Nuevo León and Baja California.
•SPIKES: “Most likely these spikes…are a reflection of what has been lived in the last two weeks with (holiday) celebrations in which people came together raising the risk of (coronavirus) contagion,” Ricardo Cortés, a Mexico Health Ministry official, said Wednesday night.
•NUMBERS: As of late Wednesday, Mexico has officially reported 1,479,835 coronavirus cases and 129,987 coronavirus deaths. Mexico is the fourth country in the world with the most coronavirus deaths in absolute terms and is among the highest in terms of mortality rates.
