•STUDY: One in every four Mexicans (31 million) would test positive for coronavirus antibodies, according to early estimates by government experts who conducted a limited study of households which could be extrapolated to the larger universe of the Mexican population.

•METHODOLOGY: The study included 9,400 Mexican households examining samples for antibodies to coronavirus and was carried out between August and November. Among those testing positive, 70 percent were asymptomatic individuals, something that authorities say should be a concern.

•INFECTION: “The vast majority (of Mexicans) are still vulnerable to infection”, said Juan Rivera, head of Mexico’s National Institute of Public Health (INSP). “There are almost 100 million people (who haven’t been infected). We must not lower our guard”.

•NUMBERS: As of late Tuesday, Mexico has officially reported 1,267,202 coronavirus cases and 115,099 coronavirus deaths. Mexico is the fourth country in the world with the most coronavirus deaths in absolute terms and one with the highest positivity rates.
