•FLIGHTS: Troubled airline Interjet suspended flights across Mexico for a fifth day in a row given that it has no money to pay for jet fuel according to employee sources cited by Reforma newspaper. While the airline has officially announced it, customers reported receiving flight cancellation notices.
•TROUBLES: Due to financial pains that predated the coronavirus pandemic, Interjet has been forced to suspend service sporadically this year. On Monday, Mexico’s consumer protection agency (PROFECO) said reported receiving 1,542 passenger complaints against Interjet this year.
•FRAUD: “It is irresponsible (of the Mexican authorities) because they could take actions such as closing points of sale…because at the end of the day it is already a premeditated fraud on the part of the airline. They know are not going to comply”, said Pablo Casas, an aviation industry lawyer.
•NUMBERS: Interjet was the eighth-largest Latin American airline in 2019 measured by number of passengers served (15.1 million), according to data compiled by the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association. Back in 2019 Interjet served 55 destinations with 82 planes.
