•MILLION: Mexico surpassed one million confirmed coronavirus cases this past weekend according to official government numbers. However, the country’s mortality rate and test-positivity rate suggest that the real number of infections is probably much higher.
•NUMBERS: As of late Sunday, Mexico has officially reported 1,006,552 coronavirus cases and 98,542 deaths. Mexico City accounts for a 16% share of total confirmed cases. Mexico is the fourth country in the world with the most coronavirus deaths in absolute terms.
•GOVERNMENT: “It is a bit inconsequential but it is newsworthy every time there is a round number”, said Mexico’s undersecretary of health Hugo López-Gatell. “In fact, if we take the estimated cases, we have already more than a million. We have one million 166 thousand”.
•HIGHER: Mexico has the highest coronavirus mortality rates among the world’s most affected countries at 9.8% and one of the highest test-positivity rates at 42%, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. which suggests that the true case count is probably higher than reported.
