• CLAIMS: Mexico’s president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) doubled down Monday on his decision not to congratulate Joe Biden on his projected victory in the US presidential election until all legal claims presented by his rival, current president Donald Trump are sorted out.
• INTERVENTION: The Mexican president argued that he was withholding his congratulations in order not to intervene in US domestic politics. López Obrador brought up his own personal experience in 2006, when he unsuccessfully ran for president of Mexico and claimed electoral fraud.
• WAITING: “If we made a pronouncement (about the US election) it would be as if we were electoral judges”, said López Obrador. “Waiting does not mean that we are endorsing there was any fraud. We do not know that, nor does it pertain to us. That has to be solved by judges in the US”
• LEADERS: López Obrador is among a handful of world leaders that have yet to congratulate Biden despite US media projections showing him as the effective winner. Other prominent leaders that have opted not to congratulate Biden include the leaders of China, Russia, Turkey and Brazil.
