• RECORDS: US natural gas exports to Mexico via pipeline have reached record levels propelled by the Mexican economy’s reopening after the second-quarter coronavirus lockdown and by the displacement of other natural gas sources, the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) said.

•FIGURES: Citing data from S&P Global Platts, the EIA said that export levels of natural gas via pipeline from the US into Mexico averaged 5.9 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) between July and September, a substantial increase from the 5.1 Bcf/d average for the entire 2019.

• DISPLACEMENT: “These increases have more than offset declines in Mexico’s imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and relatively smaller declines in Mexico’s domestic natural gas production”, said a group of EIA analysts led by Victoria Zaretskaya said last week.

• POTENTIAL: According to S&P Global Platts, current US installed capacity could allow natural gas exports via pipeline into Mexico reach up to 14.5 Bcf/d. However, the expansion depends both on the completion of several projects in Mexico and on the pace of the coronvirus recovery.
