• INFECTION: The mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, confirmed Tuesday that she has tested positive for coronavirus but added she will continue at the helm of city affairs given that she has not developed symptoms. Proper Mexico City is home to 8.9 million people.
• NUMBERS: As of late Monday, Mexico has officially reported 895,326 coronavirus cases and 89,171 deaths. Mexico City accounts for a 16% share of total confirmed cases. Mexico is the fourth country in the world with the most coronavirus deaths in absolute terms.
• GOVERNMENT: “I feel good, strong and I am under medical supervision … So far I have no symptoms. I will continue working and coordinating all (government) activities remotely, with the same commitment as always”, Sheinbaum wrote on Twitter.
• OFFICIALS: In addition to the Mexico City mayor, the governors of eight Mexican states (Durango, Quintana Roo, Tamaulipas, Hidalgo, Tabasco, Querétaro, Guerrero and Michoacán) have contracted coronavirus. Last week, one Senator died amid an outbreak in the Upper Chamber of Congress.
