SURGE: Eight Mexican states are registering an uptick in coronavirus cases including three northern states located along the US border, Mexican health authorities alerted. The rebound has forced state governments to implement tougher restrictions on economic activity.

NUMBERS: As of late Sunday, Mexico has officially reported 851,227 coronavirus cases and 86,167 deaths. Mexico City accounts for a 16% share of total confirmed cases. Mexico is the fourth country in the world with the most coronavirus deaths in absolute terms.

CURVE: “For a while we were seeing an important decline in the national (epidemic) curve. But in the last weeks there has been a stagnation, there is a plateau in…the curve”, said Ruy López Ridaura, a Mexican health official. “We are seeing that no there were changes in the number of national cases”

BORDER: The US border states of Chihuahua, Coahuila and Nuevo León are among those seeing an uptick in cases. Mexican authorities said that the rebound was one of the reasons that led them to extend the current restrictions to non-essential travel at the US-Mexico border until November 21.
