•RECOVERY: The number of tourists arriving to the Mexican resort of Los Cabos in 2020 is expected to fall 50 percent from 2019 due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to the local tourism board. However, early signs show Los Cabos recovering faster than other Mexican beach destinations.
•INTERNATIONAL: After reopening in mid-June, preliminary numbers from Mexican airport operators show that international tourist arrivals to Los Cabos in July were at 26.6% of their July 2019 levels compared with 18.1% for Puerto Vallarta and 14.9% for Cancún.
• SCENARIO: “This is considering that we were totally closed for two and a half months”, said Rodrigo Esponda, managing director for the Los Cabos Tourism Board (FITURCA). Current Mexican health authorities regulations limit hotel capacity at 40% to prevent contagion.
• FORECAST: In May, the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) estimated that the coronavirus shock would mean a decline of between 58% and 78% in international tourist arrivals depending on the duration of the crisis and the speed of the recovery effort in each geographic area.
