• THRESHOLD: Mexico’s official coronavirus death toll topped 50,000 today, the world’s third highest, far exceeding Mexican authorities’ original forecasts. In early June, officials said that Mexico’s most plausible scenario was reaching 35,000 coronavirus deaths.
• NUMBERS: As of late Thursday, Mexico has officially reported 462,690 coronavirus cases and 50,517 deaths. Mexico City accounts for a 16% share of total confirmed cases. The neighboring state of State of Mexico follows in second place with a 12% share of cases.
• ESTIMATES: “We have not yet ruled out (reaching) up to 30,000 or 35,000 (deaths). It’s the most plausible interval”, said Hugo López Gatell, Mexico’s coronavirus czar, on June 4th. “The catastrophic (scenario) is that (the country’s death toll) can reach 60,000”.
• PROJECTION: According to a projection by the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), Mexico is on track to reach 118,000 coronavirus deaths on December 1st. The number could be lowered to 104,000 if a face mask mandate is enacted.
