• DISAGREEMENT: A vast majority of Mexicans (77%) disagree with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s refusal to wear a face mask in public and almost all (93%) support the idea of a mask mandate to stop coronavirus spread, according to a new poll by Mexico City’s Reforma newspaper.

• MANAGEMENT: With Mexico approaching 50,000 total coronavirus deaths, 78% of Mexicans believe that face masks are a useful tool to prevent the coronavirus contagion. Last month, President López Obrador said that the use of masks was not scientifically proven to avoid coronavirus spread.

• DISAPPROVAL: While the approval of President López Obrador’s management of the pandemic somewhat recovered (43% approval) after dipping in June (33% approval), a majority of Mexicans (67%) believe that his government does not have the situation under control.

• ECONOMY: At the same time, the number of Mexicans who reported having stopped receiving income due to the economic impact of the coronavirus crisis rose to 51% from 36% in April. Reforma’s poll was conducted via phone among 400 adults between July 30 and August 1.
