• AGAINST: Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said today that he does not wear a face mask because according to him it has not been “scientifically proven” to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Mexico has officially recorded 370, 712 coronavirus cases.
• EXCUSE: “I’ve been told that I don’t need a face mask if I keep social distance,” said López Obrador during a working trip in Oaxaca state while not wearing a face mask. “If it were considered that (the face mask) helps, then I would, of course. But it is not a matter that has been scientifically proven”
• CONTROVERSY: López Obrador, 66, has only used face masks in public when flying commercial. Last month, the World Health Organization (WHO) encouraged the use of face masks in certain settings. Early this week, he downplayed that the use of face mask could help the economy.
• GUIDANCE: “(The organization) has updated its guidance to advise that to prevent Covid-19 transmission effectively in areas of community transmission, governments should encourage the general public to wear masks in specific situations and settings”, said the WHO on June 5.
