• DISAPPEARANCES: The number of people who remain disappeared in Mexico has risen to a total of 73,201 highlighting the security challenge the country faces since 2006. The grim statistic includes 324 US nationals, the Mexican government reported Monday.
• US NATIONALS: According to a new online database presented by Mexico’s Interior Ministry, 137 of the missing US nationals were reported disappeared in the northern border state of Tamaulipas which has endured cyclical waves of violence between warring drug gangs and Mexican security forces.
• MIGRANTS: “The (foreign) nationality with the largest number of disappearance reports is the US. The figures do not necessarily reflect disappearances of migrants (from other regions like Central America) as we believe should be reflected”, said Karla Quintana, head of the Mexico’s national search commission.
• DETAILS: With the López Obrador Administration touting a slower growth in disappearances during the past six months, the fact remains that at least 10 US nationals have disappeared only this year. Two thirds of the total missing US nationals are men and data evidences noticeable uptick since 2016.
