• RESTRICTION: Mexican travelers will remain banned from entering the European Union (EU) this week when the bloc begins to lift border restrictions established as a response to the coronavirus pandemic. Starting on July 1st, travelers from a selected group of 14 countries will be allowed to enter the EU.

• FACTORS: After intense debate, the EU said Tuesday that it had decided to reopen its borders to visitors of 14 countries after reviewing coronavirus incidence rates, trends and overall responses to the pandemic. As of late Monday, Mexico has officially reported 220,657 coronavirus cases.

• CRITERIA: “The criteria to determine the third countries for which the current travel restriction should be lifted cover in particular the epidemiological situation and containment measures, including physical distancing, as well as economic and social considerations”, the EU Council said.

• INCIDENCE: According to the most recent data, the coronavirus incidence rate in Mexico is 172.6. Currently, the highest coronavirus incidence rate among EU countries is Belgium with 85.2. Meanwhile, EU authorities also blocked US tourists to enter the bloc at present time.
