• AUTHORITIES: Mexico’s relatively high positivity rate in coronavirus testing is not a worrisome sign given that the country’s strategy against the pandemic is not anchored in an ‘indiscriminate’ approach to testing, Mexican coronavirus response leader, Hugo López-Gatell, said Monday.
• NUMBERS: As of late Monday, Mexico has officially reported 185,122 coronavirus cases and 22,584 deaths. Mexico City accounts for a 23% share of total confirmed cases. The neighboring state of State of Mexico follows in second place with a 15% share of cases.
• INDISCRIMINATE: “When (coronavirus) tests are done indiscriminately among those who just feel like doing the test, even if he or she is asymptomatic o, the probability that the result comes out positive is less”, said López Gatell during his daily press conference.
• POSITIVITY: According to the government’s most recent numbers, Mexico’s positivity rate in coronavirus testing is 43%. On May 12, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended governments to achieve a low positivity rate (below 5%) before considering lifting lockdown orders.
