• DROP: The percentage of Mexicans who approve President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic took a steep drop from 50% in mid-May to 33% in mid-June, according to a national poll released Saturday by Mexico City’s Reforma newspaper.
• PANDEMIC: The decline in the approval of President’s handling of the pandemic occurs as coronavirus deaths steadily increased from 5,000 in mid-May to 20-000 in mid-June. According to the new poll, 32% of Mexicans know someone who died from coronavirus, up from 16% in mid-May.
• UNFAVORABLE: “The President has unfavorable numbers in terms of approval of his handling of the crisis and regarding his credibility (among Mexicans)”, said Lorena Becerra and Rodrigo León, experts at Reforma newspaper’s polling department and who conducted the survey.
• DEATHS: Early in June, Mexican government health officials estimated that the total number of coronavirus deaths would reach between 30,000 and 35,000. However, a majority of Mexicans (59%) remain skeptical and said that the number will be higher.
