• REOPENING: Mexico City will delay further reopening until the end of June as it remains stuck in a high plateau where coronavirus cases and hospital occupancy are not falling as fast as desirable. This, as Mexico passed today the mark of 20,000 coronavirus deaths.

• NUMBERS: As of late Friday, Mexico has officially reported 170,485 coronavirus cases and 20,394 deaths. Mexico City accounts for a 24% share of total confirmed cases. The neighboring state of State of Mexico follows in second place with a 15% share of cases.

• PLATEAU: “Even though the number of people hospitalized has continued to decline, this has not been at a faster rate. So it is preferable to stay in this circumstance…for the next week”, said Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum. A further reopening of non essential activities will be considered for June 28th.

• EPICENTER: While other large metro areas like Guadalajara and Monterrey are expected to peak later in the year, the Mexico City has remained the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic in the country. Close to 25% of Mexico’s coronavirus deaths happened in Mexico City proper.
