• PLATEAU: Mexico City is ramping up its testing and tracking capacities as the number of new coronavirus cases remains stuck at a plateau. Along with more forceful calls to use face masks in public spaces, the city hopes to increase from 1,000 to 2,700 the number of daily coronavirus tests

• NUMBERS: As of late Thursday, Mexico has officially reported 133,974 coronavirus cases and 15,944 deaths. Mexico City accounts for a 25% share of total confirmed cases. The neighboring state of State of Mexico follows in second place with a 16% share of cases.

• NEW SCHEME: “I’m convinced…that when we move into this scheme…it will allow for the level contagion not to grow and to gradually decrease”, said Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum. The new plan breaks with the guidances developed by the López Obrador administration.

• TESTS: While other countries developed massive systems to track and to test new cases, Mexico lagged behind. Despite being considered the epicenter of the pandemic in Mexico, Mexico City (8.8 million) has only tested 43,897 patients and received 450,000 phone reports citywide.
