• METRO: The coronavirus epidemic curve in the Mexico City metro area has reached a plateau where the number of new confirmed cases is not falling, Mexican authorities admitted today. With 33,173 cases, the Mexico City area (pop. 21 million) remains Mexico’s outbreak epicenter.
• NUMBERS: As of late Wednesday, Mexico has officially reported 129,184 coronavirus cases and 15,357 deaths. Mexico City accounts for a 26% share of total confirmed cases. The neighboring state of State of Mexico follows in second place with a 15% share of cases.
• PLATEAU: “The prediction has been exceeded because there is persistence (in cases). We have been around 17, 18 days in which the descent of the curve has stagnated”, said Hugo López-Gatell, Mexico’s undersecretary of health. “(The epidemic curve) is on a plateau”.
• MAYOR: Last month, Mexico City authorities said they expected to begin a phase-in reopening beyond essential activities on Monday June 15th. However, the city Mayor said today that given the plateau in the epidemic curve of new cases this further reopening could prove difficult.
