• ARRESTS: Authorities in the western state of Jalisco said Monday that six people remain in custody after Saturday’s clashes in the state capital of Guadalajara between police forces and protesters against police abuse. An undisclosed number of other protesters previously arrested were released.

• EFFORT: “The entirety of all those who were arrested by state police between Thursday and Friday have already been released even when there were charges against them. These people were released as an effort to demonstrate good faith”, said Macedonio Tamez, head of security in Jalisco.

• PROTESTS: Last week, hundreds took the streets of Guadalajara (pop. 5 million) to protest the death in police custody of 30-year-old Giovanni López in the neighboring municipality of Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos. After the protests, civil society groups denounced dozens of arrests and alleged disappearances.

• CONDEMNATION: “We have information indicating that the whereabouts of several people arrested yesterday in the vicinity of the Jalisco Attorney General’s office are unknown. We remind authorities of their duty to report on any arrests”, the UN’s Human Rights office (OHCHR) in Mexico City said Saturday.
