Guadalajara: Fury over death of man arrested by police

• MAYHEM: Protests over the death of 30-year-old bricklayer Giovanni López while in police custody turned violent Thursday night in downtown Guadalajara -Mexico’s second largest city- with authorities reporting 24 arrests, seven police officers hurt, damages to police cars and city property.

 

• INCIDENT: “(The cops) told us: ‘he’s not wearing a face mask!’ They grabbed (Giovanni) and beat him among 10 policemen”, Christian López, brother of the victim, told Mural newspaper. The arrest happened May 4th in the Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos municipality just 25 miles from Guadalajara,

 

• POLICE: Authorities in the state of Jalisco said they have arrested three local officers for its alleged involvement in the May 4th incident. The police department in Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos has been marred with accusations of abuse and three of its officers were convicted of murder in April.

 

• ALLEGATIONS: “Behind everything that is happening…there are very precise and specific interests devised in Mexico City’s cellars of power seeking to harm Jalisco”, said Jalisco’s governor, Enrique Alfaro, following the Thursday’s mayhem pointing to directly to Mexico’s ruling Morena party
