• DEADLY: Mexico reported Wednesday night the largest one-day increase in its coronavirus death toll adding 1,092 fatalities. Due to the Mexican government methodology, Wednesday’s one-day number does not necessarily mean that the deaths occurred in the last 24 hours.
• NUMBERS: As of late Wednesday, Mexico has officially reported 101,238 coronavirus cases and 11,729 deaths. Mexico City accounts for a 26% share of total confirmed cases. The neighboring state of State of Mexico follows in second place with a 16% share of cases.
• RISKS: “Right now we are in a very dangerous moment. We are in a situation of high risk of contagion”, said Hugo López Gatell, Mexico’s undersecretary of health. In its original models, the Mexican government had predicted that the pandemic would peak in early May.
• REOPENING: Despite the grim situation, Mexico began a phased-in reopening of its economy on June 1st after several weeks of lockdown. However, Mexico City is only expected to lift restrictions when hospital bed usage is below 65% of capacity. Currently, this figure is above 70%.
