Mexican auto industry gradually reopens, including 'Big Three'

• INDUSTRY: Most car manufacturers in Mexico -including Detroit’s Big 3- have slowly resumed operations after more than two months of shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. On Monday, German automaker Volkswagen announced the reopening of its two Mexican plants on June 15th.

 

• BIG THREE: Just yesterday, Ford confirmed to the Detroit Free Press that its four plants in Mexico had restarted. After the Mexican government declared auto manufacturing an essential activity, GM resumed operations on May 21st while FCA reopened its plants on May 25th.

 

• ATMOSPHERE: “Volkswagen will ask its employees during to intensify sanitary measures during the next 15 days, asking them to remain home and ask their family and friends to do the same. This will improve the atmosphere when we return to work in two weeks”, the company said Monday.

 

• JAPANESE: Meanwhile, Japanese car manufacturers have also slowly reopened their Mexican facilities: Honda on May 18th (Guanajuato), Nissan on May 25th (Aguascalientes and Morelos), Mazda on June 1st (Guanajuato) and Toyota also on June 1st (Guanajuato).
