• THRESHOLD: Mexico officially crossed the threshold of 10,000 coronavirus deaths according to the latest figures presented by Mexican health authorities on Monday night. With the global pandemic’s epicenter hovering over Latin America, Mexico reaffirms iits place as the seventh country in the world by total coronavirus deaths.

• NUMBERS: As of late Monday, Mexico has officially reported 93,435 coronavirus cases and 10,177 deaths. Mexico City accounts for a 27% share of total confirmed cases. The neighboring state, State of Mexico, follows in second place with a 16% share of cases.

• PREPARATION: “What would have been required to avoid this? Having a very intense preparation, a lot of money…both for hospitals and personal protective equipment… and, particularly…having a lot of early detection”, said Alejandro Macías, an expert at Mexico’s National University (UNAM).

• REOPENING: As Mexico crossed the 10,000-death threshold, the country officially embarked Monday into a phased-in reopening of daily activities. Without wearing a face mask, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) began Monday a work trip through the hard hit Caribbean resort of Cancún.
