• CONCERN: The Pacific port city of Acapulco in the southern state of Guerrero has become Mexico’s central concern as the coronavirus pandemic moves through the country. With critical care bed usage at 78%, Guerrero state has seen so far a total of 1,363 coronavirus cases and 189 deaths.

• NUMBERS: Mexico has officially reported 74,560 coronavirus cases and 8,134 total deaths. Mexico City accounts for a 28% share of total confirmed cases but the government says it is seeing a plateau. Mexico reported Tuesday its highest daily number of deaths added to its official tally.

• ACAPULCO: “In the case of Mexico City we are at the peak. This is the plateau and there are sign that we are going to start the descent”, Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador said today. “We only have the concern of Guerrero and especially Acapulco, which is already being addressed”.

• CAPACITY: Local health workers unions reported hat two of Acapulco’s main public hospitals -Ciudad Renacimiento and El Quemado- are at full capacity with regards to critical care beds. A longtime tourism mecca, Acapulco (pop. 810,000) is by far the largest city in Guerrero state.
