• GROWTH: The share of Mexicans who say having experienced corruption by a public official increased during the first year of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. According to a new survey by Mexico’s statistics agency (INEGI), the share grew from 14.6% in 2017 to 15.7% in 2019.
• TRENDS: “There is a positive perception that the control of corruption will be a government priority”, said Eduardo Bohórquez, head of Transparencia Mexicana, a civil society NGO. “But at the same time, corruption that affects people’s lives continues to be frequent and in many cases…it grows “.
• SURVEY: Elected to office in 2018, López Obrador’s main campaign theme was fighting government corruption. Once in the Presidency, and despite criticisms from watchdog and expert groups, López Obrador has gone as far to say that his government ended corruption in Mexico.
• BLAME: “At the lower levels there is still extortion. And there are local governments that still do not understand that this has already changed”, said López Obrador today shifting blame. “As much as it sent them messages warning them that the situation changed”.
