• BUS RIDE: A 70-year-old woman died from coronavirus on April 6, just 11 days after completing a 2,200-mile bus ride between Chicago and the southern Mexican city of Iguala (pop. 151,000), local officials told Reforma newspaper. Her case has being tied to a deadly outbreak near Iguala’s market.

• DEATH: Presumably a US permanent resident, the 70-year-old -identified only by her first name, Demetria- boarded an Iguala-bound bus in Chicago on March 25 showing no symptoms, according to local comptroller Frumencio Ramírez. Demetria would die at Iguala’s general hospital.

• OUTBREAK: Local authorities say that Demetria’s is now suspected to be the first case that sparked a coronavirus outbreak near Iguala’s central market and that quickly expanded to nearby grocery stores. Authorities estimate 20 coronavirus deaths in the market area.

• COMPANY: Part of the estimated 1 million Mexican-origin population living in Chicago, many residents of Guerrero -the state where Iguala is located- travel back and forth using charter bus companies. Mexican government data shows 85 coronavirus cases and 34 deaths in Iguala.
