• REOPENING: Mexico’s largest car manufacturer, General Motors (GM), on Thursday was restarting operations at two of its four manufacturing facilities in Mexico -the motors plant in Ramos Arizpe and the transmissions plant in Silao- after nearly two months of idling due to the coronavirus emergency.
• LARGEST: One week after Mexico declared auto manufacturing an essential activity, GM said auto assembly at Ramos Arizpe and Silao could resume as early as Friday depending on its suppliers. There is still no date for reopening of GM’s Toluca and San Luis Potosí facilities.
• SAFETY: “The well-being and safety of our collaborators have been and will be our highest priority. We are doing everything necessary to guarantee a safe and reliable resuming of operations”, said Francisco Garza, president of GM Mexico, who detailed a new hygiene protocol at the plants.
• PROTOCOLS: Monitored by the Mexican government, GM’s new hygiene protocols include taking temperature of workers before entering the plants, the use of face masks and safety glasses, regular sanitizing and better ventilation systems. GM manufactured 827,000 vehicles in Mexico in 2019.
