• DEATHS: For the second day in a row, Mexican authorities recorded more than 400 coronavirus deaths across the country, bringing total confirmed fatalities to 6,591. On Wednesday, the Mexican Ministry of Health added 424 coronavirus deaths to its tally. Today, it added 420 more.

• NUMBERS: As of late Thursday, Mexico has officially reported 59,567 coronavirus cases. Mexico City accounts for approximately a 28% share of total confirmed cases. The neighboring state, State of Mexico, follows in second place with a 16% share of cases.

• PEAK: “Right now we are in the phase of maximum transmission in the Mexico City area. In other areas it is decreasing and in others it is increasing”, said Hugo López Gatell, Mexico’s undersecretary of health. The Mexico City metro area is home to 21 million people.

• REOPENING: Several weeks after the government declared a coronavirus emergency on March 30, Mexico started a phased-in reopening of daily activities on May 18. On that date, the government allowed a group of less than 300 municipalities where no cases have been recorded to reopen.
