• EPIDEMIC: Two of Mexico’s richest states -Jalisco and Nuevo León- have yet to experience the brunt of the coronavirus outbreak which means they could only see the downward path of the epidemic curve until August, Mexican health authorities warned.

• CURVES: Given that most of Mexico is beginning a phased-in reopening on June 1, the late arrival of the epidemic to Jalisco (pop. 7.8 million) and Nuevo León (pop. 5.1 million) represents an added challenge for authorities trying to keep people from the streets.

• STATES: “We have states, like for example, Nuevo León and Jalisco where the epidemic is just about to begin. Obviously they cannot maintain an extremely intense level of reduced mobility permanently”, said Hugo López Gatell, Mexico’s undersecretary of health.

• NATIONAL: As of late Tuesday, Mexico has officially reported 54,346 coronavirus cases and 5,666 total deaths. Mexico City accounts for 28% share of total confirmed cases nationwide. So far, Jalisco’s share is 1.6% while Nuevo León’s is 1.7%.
