• FORECAST: Mexico City expects to begin of a phased-in reopening of daily life on June 15 once the coronavirus epidemic begins to decline. However, the city’s reopening will depend on reaching a hospital-bed occupancy rate below 65%. Currently, the rate is 72%

• NUMBERS: As of late Wednesday, Mexico has officially reported 56,594 coronavirus cases and 6,090 total deaths. Mexico City accounts for approximately a 28% share of total confirmed cases. The neighboring state, State of Mexico, follows in second place with a 16% share of cases.

• CAPACITY: “We will continue to be at a red (level) if the number of beds in hospitals in Mexico City continues to increase and if there is a (bed) occupancy of more than 65 percent”, said Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, referring to the city’s color-coded alert system.

• ACTIVITIES: Following federal guidelines, Mexico City will allow for auto manufacturing, construction and mining industries to restart activities on June 1. Beer production will also resume work on that date. Mexico City is home to 8.8 million but its metro area includes 21 million people.
