• COUNT: Mexico recorded the largest one-day increase in its coronavirus death count adding 353 confirmed deaths on Tuesday. Due to the methodology used by the Mexican government, Tuesday’s one-day number does not necessarily mean deaths happened during the 24-hour period prior.
• NUMBERS: As of late Wednesday, Mexico has officially reported 38,324 coronavirus cases and 3,926 total deaths. Mexico City accounts for approximately a 27% share of total confirmed cases. The neighboring state, State of Mexico, follows in second place with a 17% share of cases.
• CRITICAL: “We are in the critical part of the pandemic”, Mexico’s Minister of Health, Jorge Alcocer, said on Wednesday. The Mexican government said recently that the Mexico City area will remain at pandemic peak until at least May 20th. Independent experts believe it will extend until June.
• EMERGENCY: On Tuesday, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador acknowledged publicly that it was on March 27 that he received a report saying the Mexican health system could be overwhelmed by the pandemic. López Obrador had been criticized for not taking the crisis seriously.
