• REOPENING: The tourism industry in the seaside resort of Los Cabos in Mexico’s Baja peninsula is gearing up plans to reopen 40% of its hotels in June as plan of a gradual recovery plan from the coronavirus emergency. A complete 100% reopening would only happen until December.

• PLANS: Like other tourism sites worldwide, Los Cabos is readying up new hygiene protocols across the whole industry chain -including taxis and restaurants- to reassure nervous travelers. Occupancy in Los Cabos fell by 30% in March 2020 with respect to March 2019, government data shows.

• PHASES: “We know that the recovery will be gradual and the results of these months will not be the same as last year” says Lilzi Orci, head of the Los Cabos Hotel Association (AHLC), a group that represents more than 80 hotels belonging to international and Mexican brands.

• EMERGENCY: Mexico issued its nationwide health emergency declaration on March 30th but many tourists had already cancelled vacations in Los Cabos starting in late February due to the coronavirus scare. Currently, the Mexican government has cancelled non-essential activities until May 30th.
