• DOUBTS: The Mexican government’s official coronavirus death toll may not be including hundreds of cases in Mexico City linked to the outbreak, according to Mexican officials and data cited by the New York Times. In a separate story, the Wall Street Journal also suggested undercounting.
• DATA: “The Mexican government is not reporting hundreds, possibly thousands, of deaths from the coronavirus in Mexico City, dismissing anxious officials who have tallied more than three times as many fatalities in the capital than the government publicly acknowledges”, the Times piece states.
• INFORMATION: According to the data cited by the New York Times, officials in Mexico City have counted at least 2,500 deaths potentially linked to coronavirus. The official government count for the whole metro area is of 700. Mexico City officials denied wrongdoing.
• TRANSPARENCY: “Not only are we not interested in hiding the information but quite the opposite: we want the information to be opened and that is why we opened a transparency website”, said Claudia Sheinbaum, the mayor of Mexico City when asked about the allegations.
