• PEAK: The Mexico City metro area has reached its coronavirus pandemic peak and will not come out of it until at least May 20th, Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said. López Obrador said that government projections see coronavirus cases lowering after that date.

• NUMBERS: As of late Thursday, Mexico has officially reported 29,616 coronavirus cases and 2,961 deaths. Mexico City accounts for approximately a 27% share of total confirmed cases. The neighboring state, State of Mexico, follows in second place with a 17% share of cases.

• CITY: “In the case of Mexico City, we are in the phase of greatest contagion … From now until (May) 20th. And the projection is that the number of infections will start to drop from there”, said López Obrador on Friday. He added that other regional outbreaks are evolving well.

• REGIONAL: In addition to the Mexico City metro area (pop. 21 million), the government is monitoring four other regional outbreaks: the Caribbean resort of Cancún, the border city of Tijuana, the northwestern city of Culiacán and the southeastern city of Villahermosa.
