• HOSPITALS: As Mexico hits pandemic peak, 28 of 69 public hospitals equipped to deal with coronavirus patients in the Mexico City metro area are reporting low numbers of available beds, according to local government data. The Mexico City area is one of five key regional outbreaks.
• NUMBERS: As of late Wednesday, Mexico has officially reported 27,634 coronavirus cases and 2,704 deaths. Mexico City accounts for approximately a 27% share of total confirmed cases. The neighboring state, State of Mexico, follows in second place with a 16% share of cases.
• EXPECTATIONS: “Everything is going according to what (experts) predicted regarding the development in the number of cases and the places where there are more infections”, said President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, about how the epidemic is behaving across the country.
• PRIVATE: Last week, the most prestigious private hospitals in Mexico City -including ABC Observatorio, Hospital Español, Médica Sur and Ángeles- were already reporting insufficient space to deal with coronavirus patients. At the time there were only 82 beds left.
